LOVE

Love is a disease.

The more you think about it,

the more it hurts.

The more you try to treat it,

the more it hurts.

The only cure is to infect someone else with its toxic kiss

and hope they can handle it.

The infection moves quickly,

and the effects are clearly visible.

First, there are the sweaty palms,

then the constant nervousness

that turns you into the little kid you never got to be.

Sure, the first time you got dumped on your birthday you cried,

but you grew up so fast you never felt what love was supposed to be,

and your parents never showed signs of infection.

The whole idea was created by Hollywood as far as you’re concerned,

but you can’t help but notice how sick you’re becoming.

Your nervousness allows you to share things you never thought you’d tell anyone.

There cannot be awkward silence.

You begin vomiting your life story

and for some reason this person is eating it up

and enjoying every bite.

Soon, “my mom this,”

and “my dad that”

begins spewing from your mouth so freely.

You never thought your life could be interesting to anyone,

but this person wants to know you inside and out.

Then, they begin vomiting and you’re eating it up.

Before you know it,

you’re no longer waiting for them to vomit,

but are so anxious you actually suck it right out of them.

This infectious kiss allows the disease to spread faster

and faster,

until it’s reproducing at an exponential rate.

Somehow, you don’t care.

The touch of her lips seems so right –

like they were the only pair you were meant to touch.

A fever overcomes you.

You can’t help but touch this person

and find them to be just as warm as you.

It’s so hot.

You begin shedding clothes in an attempt to stay cool,

but the fever only intensifies.

Soon, you’re both naked,

swapping spit and sweat.

You know this can’t help you overcome the infection,

but at this point you’re no longer in control.

The fever is forcing your actions.

You’ve felt these effects before,

but not nearly as intense.

The lust-induced fever eventually passes,

but the fever of love lasts forever.

You try to breathe

but there’s no air.

The sickness is suffocating you.

You don’t pass out,

but instead,

hallucinate and experience the most euphoric of feelings.

Suddenly, it’s not a sickness anymore –

just a really good drug.

You yearn for it,

need it,

and frequently overdose on it.

You’re delirious now.

The sickness is so severe that you begin to enjoy it.

Instead of searching for a cure,

you search for ways to strengthen and prolong the disease.

I see no way out of love.

It will continue to haunt me.
