It’s Time to Party with God: Andrew WK Announces New Record Release

The God of Partying, Andrew WK, has us all partying today, including God. His new record, God is Partying, drops September 10, and he gave us all a sneak preview by releasing a music video for a track on the record, “I’m in Heaven.” It is one of the best music videos I’ve seen in quite some time, and the song surely has God partying his face off.

Watching the “I’m in Heaven” video is like looking into the Ark of the Covenant. Your face might very well melt. Andrew WK never disappoints me, but he’s truly outdone himself with this one. I’ve already preordered the limited edition green LP and can’t wait to see him live whenever the opportunity presents itself.

I’ve seen Andrew WK in concert three times, all at Riot Fest, and I’m pretty sure I’ve cried tears of joy at every one of them. This year, though, I have to see him play a full set, and then maybe see him again. No one is more dedicated to performing a live show that has everyone in attendance partying like they never have before and never will again. And no one likely burns more calories performing than Andrew WK. In a previous piece for Grandstand Central, I called Andrew WK the “Wayne Gretzky of Party Music,” because he absolutely is “The Great One” when it comes to making party music.

My stock portfolio taking a massive dive this morning had me a shit mood. Then I saw “I’m in Heaven” and all was right in my world. Everyone’s world would be better with Andrew WK in it. If you’re not into metal, listen to his record 55 Cadillac, featuring him on piano and nothing more. No lyrics are necessary, which he proves once again with the limited lyrics in “I’m in Heaven.” The only words in the song are “take me to heaven,” “send me to heaven,” and “I’m in heaven.” And the song is strong as hell despite its lyrical simplicity.

If you don’t like 55 Cadillac, read one of Andrew’s columns for Vice. I’ve read them all and they are insightful, helpful, and well written. I swear, Andrew WK can do whatever he wants better than most of us do what we do best. Let’s all just be thankful he didn’t end up doing what he wanted to out of high school, although I could see the Andrew WK clothing line taking off if he ever launched it. He’d probably get my money. Hell, I feel like I should be paying him for all the psychotherapy he provides me.

If metal, classical piano, or reading aren’t your bag, check out an interview with the God of Partying. He’s incredibly insightful and willing to open up about how music helps him deal with bouts of sadness and anxiety. He’s also hilarious.

Thank you for everything you do, Andrew WK, and for doing a little bit of everything.
